History
The
Puget Sound Log Scaling & Grading Bureau was formed in 1912 to serve the forest
products industry of Washington. The purpose for creating the Bureau was to supply trained
"scalers" to the industry which would provide independent measurement and
quality assessment of logs. By utilizing independent scalers, the accuracy of the
"scale" is unbiased and benefits all parties in a log sale/purchase transaction.
As the need for our services developed in the 1970s, the Bureau opened an office in
Ketchikan, Alaska to better serve that state.
Management
The home office of the
Bureau is located at 2720 South J Street in Tacoma, Washington and is managed by Tom
Hedglin. The Alaska operations is located at 2030 Sealevel Drive in Ketchikan, Alaska and
is under the management of Sam Cagley. To contact the Tacoma office by phone call (253)
383-1501 or e-mail to admin@psls.com
The Ketchikan office phone number is (907)
225-6340
Philosophy:
The Bureau continually provides training for the scalers to keep
them abreast of the latest "Rules and practices". Additionally, all scalers are
"Check Scaled" on a regular basis by supervisory staff to verify the accuracy
and quality of the scale.
Our scalers are certified to scale according
to Scribner, Northwest Cubic, Japanese Agricultural (JAS), US Forest Service Cubic and
Cord scale rules and practices. All scalers are also certified to scale US Forest Service
and state agency logs.
